Why RuPaul’s Drag Race Inspires Me

It all began with season 6…

I had a basic understanding of Drag back in 2014. Then one day my sister introduced me to RuPaul’s Drag Race and my mind, heart, body and soul just exploded with pure joy!

RuPaul and many other Drag Queens inspired me to be myself. I have struggled with my weight most of my life. I was diagnosed with severe asthma at the age of 5 and treated with steroids until I was 18. I had my first eating disorder when I was 13, then 18 and 21 and I continue to struggle with food 4 years later.

I have a plus size figure. I have been bullied, beaten, demeaned, abused and hated for that. I feel like I have a connection with Drag Queens, LGBT & so many others! We want to live our lives as ourselves, yet we are being punished and tortured for it. This behaviour IS NOT acceptable! I see the strength and courage you all have, it’s incredible.

I know I still have a lot to learn about Drag, LGBT etc, but what I do know is that I am proud of all of you and will always stand by you. I will never be ashamed of you. I love and respect you all.

“If you can’t love yourself how the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen?” RuPaul

Mother Ru radiates so much love and positivity it’s incredibly inspiring. The show is filled with so much shade, laugher and love.

So for those who don’t know what RuPaul’s Drag Race is, I will enlighten you…

It’s a show hosted by RuPaul, a Drag Queen. She chooses 13 drag queens to compete to win $100,000 and the title of Americas Next Drag Superstar. The queens complete different challenges each week. The main judges are RuPaul, Michele Visage, Ross Mathews & Carson Kressley. The bottom two Queens then have to lip sync for their lives!

My favourite drag queen from season 6 was Bianca Del Rio, she makes my back rolls jiggle! I just can’t get enough of her. I adore her rawness, she knows how to have a laugh.

“Not today Satan, not today.” Bianca Del Rio.

Here’s a long list of my FAVS: Alaska Thunderfuck, Alyssa Edwards, Bob The Drag Queen, Sharon Needles, Trixie Mattel, Katya Zamo, Tatianna, Detox, Shea Coulee, Nina Bonina Brown, AJA and Shaha Velour.

They have made me laugh, cry and scream at my TV! All Drag Queens are unique and inspiring individuals who bring something amazing to the show.

RuPaul’s Drag Race will continue to support and inspire past, future and present generations. For a woman who is on a self-love journey, this feels like part of the puzzle. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. It’s ok to be you.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments. I’d love to find someone who has a mutual obsession with this show!

  4. You are not alone Kirsty-Louise xxx I adore Drag Race and we share many faves. As a fat girl myself I think it’s quite common for plus size lovelies to feel an affinity with drag because it comes from a place of acceptance and zero f*cks given and essentially isn’t that really what we should all be about? In the words of Mama Ru…If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?
